Note

Although other MARC fields are necessary for the formulation of a full bibliographic record, the below section describes fields that are useful to the description of graphic novels and comics. Please consult The Bibliographic Record for information about other required MARC fields.

Comics Series

Other Considerations

  • In some situations, it might be appropriate to catalogue a continuing comics series as a serial rather than as a monograph. This might already be an established practice at your library.

    • Consider: is the title issued on a regular (daily or monthly) basis, with no clearly defined end?
    • Does the item have an ISSN?
    • Are the creators, characters, and general storyline the same from volume to volume?
    • In this situation, you may choose to add newly received volumes to one bib record, rather than creating a new record for each volume.
    • Keep in mind that this practice will limit the discoverability of each item, as there is no way to differentiate each volume in the catalogue beyond the volume number.
